Benefits of Meditation

We (Tara and I) are very excited that Fiona is one of our Virtual Book Tour Hosts (thank you Fiona).  We are touring the virtual world promoting our recently released guided journal and companion meditation CD, Journal for the Modern Goddess.

I apologise for being a day late... let’s just say “computer gremlins” and I’m sure they had a good laugh at my expense.

Today we are talking about the ‘Benefits of Meditation’.

Meditation is a powerful, spiritual practice that does not require you to practice a particular faith, religion or philosophy.  Anyone can practice meditation regardless of their cultural or religious affiliation.

Meditation aims to relax the body both mentally and physically and this is achieved by focusing on letting go of the mind chatter (or reduce or eliminate the conscious thought) and bring the mind to stillness or rest.

The benefits of meditation vary for each person.  During meditation our heart rate and breathing slows down, our blood pressure normalises, our mind becomes clearer and our creativity increases.

As we become better at meditating, it can help reduce our stress levels because we start to switch off from the worries of our day.  By allowing ourselves to have some quiet time, over time we will think clearer and therefore make better decisions.

Through meditation we gradually improve our powers of concentration; this focus can be used for both meditation and also other activities we engage in.

When we have improved our concentration, we can begin to change our negative thoughts into positive ones.  Over time and through practice, we can bring a busy mind to a complete stop, which in turns creates a more peaceful mind, allowing ourselves to focus on the things that are important.

A busy mind is a common problem, and so is holding onto resentments, past hurts, and old feelings and emotions.  Meditation is a great tool for letting go of those emotions and feelings you are holding onto.

Meditation can help identify who you are and your life purpose.  As we begin to silent our mind we can start to connect with our essence, our inner goddess.  When connected questions can be ask, such as “who am I?” “what do I stand for” “what does life want from me” etc.  You are effectively connecting with your intuition.

For mothers-to-be, meditation can put them in tune with their baby.  For pregnant women, learning to meditate, in preparation for the birth of their child can help them relax their muscles and allow their body to do the work that it is built to do during labour.  Meditation can also set the mother-to-be up for a positive birthing experience and calm their nerves prior to giving birth.

After the baby is born, meditation can help with making sense of the many new thoughts and feelings which can be running through a new mother’s mind, brought about by the events of childbirth and new motherhood.

The benefits of meditation are real; however, initially it is difficult to stop the mind chatter that is experienced on daily basis.  Meditation is about practice and finding the right meditation technique that suits you.  Do not give up straight away and if you are completely new to meditation, try sitting quietly doing nothing for 5 minutes each day, as you become better at it, increase the time to 7 minutes, then 10 minutes etc.  Alternatively use guided meditations whereby someone verbally guides you through the steps of your meditation.  Start slow and forgive yourself if you have difficulty with it as it does take time.  Be patient with yourself.

Meditation allows you to create your own sacred space, where you honour yourself and the unique light that you bring to our world.

May peace be with you!
